The Graduate Management Admission
Test or the GMAT test is a standardized test for
admission to the graduate management schools all
over the world. More than 900 management institutes,
most of which are in the US, require the GMAT
score of the applicants. Premiere business
schools that are spread across the globe rely
on the GMAT score to determine the potential of
the applicants to study advanced business management
courses. The GMAT
test aims to judge the fundamental skills
of an applicant and does not require any subject
specific theoretical study.
The GMAT test is developed and
administered by the US-based "Educational
Testing Service" or the ETS, under the direction
of the GMAC. Graduate Management Admission Council
(GMAC) is a non-profit organization of graduate
business schools worldwide. ETS sets the questions
for the test, conducts the test, and sends each
examinee the score report. For conducting the
test ETS appoints testing agencies as franchisee
of ETS at different countries. For example in
India Prometric Testing Services Pvt. Ltd. is
the testing agency. This agency is appointed by
ETS and conducts the test at 9 centres
in India.
The GMAT test is distinctively
different from all other examination that one
goes through at the school or college level. First
of all, the test does not have a conventional
question paper or answer script and does not require
the test takers to carry pen or pencil, as the
test is entirely computer based. The test does
not give the chance to leave a question unanswered
unless of course the candidate has run out of
time. In GMAT,
each test taker gets a different set of questions.
The GMAT test has two different
parts. The first part is the essay writing part
known as the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA).
The second part consists of two multiple-choice
sections of quantitative and verbal questions.
- For the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)
section the test takers have to write two essays.
For the first essay the test takers have to
analyze an argument and for the second essay
they have to analyze an issue. Each essay must
be written within 30 minutes. As far as the
scoring is concerned, a computer program that
analyzes creative writing and syntax evaluates
the essay. Then a human reader evaluates the
overall impact of the essay. [More]
- In the quantitative section, the test takers
have to answer multiple choice type problem
solving and data sufficiency questions. The
verbal section consists of reading comprehension,
sentence correction and critical reasoning.
