I am weak in Maths. Can I score well in the entrances?
Different entrances test you on different parameters. CAT and JMET give a lot of weightage to mathematics. If you wish to crack these tests, you need to work towards improving your school mathematics. And like the wise say, there is no substitute to practice. If Maths is a concern area for you, it is highly recommended that you join a classroom program as soon as you take a serious call on whether you want to take CAT.
What should be the Length of Preparing & Approach?
• We suggest a period of One year for thorough preparation of MBA Entrance
• A good approach is to distribute your time by making a study planner
- Initial 2-3 months, finish all the conceptual aspects
- The next 2-3 months, attempt the written tests
- Get back to the conceptual aspects for 2-3 months
- Attempt full tests under examination conditions for the last 2-3 months
Why one should join a coaching institute for preparation?
• If you don’t know much about the test you wish to take.
• If you are not in touch with the concepts.
• If you need some schedule to be enforced on you.
• If you need regular external feedback about your prep level, mistakes you make, etc.
• If you don’t have much time and resources to follow up and keep track of changing test pattern and syllabus.
Why one should NOT join a coaching institute for preparation?
• You can better study yourself as there is no limitation of resources these days, thanks to internet.
• You don’t have much time to take additional coaching. And the time available can be better utilized in doing self study and analysis as it is more important and mandatory in either case.
• Too much spoon feeding as in coaching institutes can hamper your creativity and thinking capacity.
What are the advantages of Coaching Institutes?
• Systematic procedure: The entire process of preparing for the admission tests becomes systematic. A student need not rack his brains as to how to go about preparing for the admission test. All he needs to do is to enroll for the classes and the rest is taken care of.
• Regularity: Within the time span allotted, preparing regularly is very much essential. The pace of preparation depends on one’s own abilities. Whatever be the pace, preparing regularly is crucial.
• Practice Tests: Tests are the highlight at all coaching centers. Based on the results, students can concentrate in whichever areas he/she is lacking. Comparing with others one can assess where one stands in the competition.
• Information Update: It is also easier to keep track of the dates of admission tests and other information related to the institutes. Coaching centers provide the latest information to the students.
What other advantages?
• Mock Tests: Mock tests are conducted on similar patterns of the actual admission tests. The student can get a feel of the actual tests. He/she can keep a track of various critical factors required in achieving the results in the admission tests. Few of them being time, speed, clarity of thought etc.
• Group Discussions/Interviews: Passing through the stages of Group Discussions and Interviews is equally important for securing admission in a Business School. Though the primary step is to clear the written tests, coaching centers do train students in the areas of Group Discussions and Interviews. For this purpose the experts guide students.
• Ambience: One aspect that matters more than anything else is the ambience provided by the coaching centers. The student can have access to everything else from his house. But it’s the ambience that makes him/her get a feel of the competitive spirit of the exams. It encourages and motivates him to perform better.

How many mocks to take before actual exam?
We recommend that you take at least 30 Mocks (including the past CAT papers, take home tests, test conducted by various institute etc) before appearing for the actual CAT. The 30 Mock should be spread over a period of time and not to be taken in a short span of say last 30 days
How important are my application forms?
It is very important to be honest in your application forms. Do not fill any information that is untrue. Certain questions in the forms ask you about Career Goals, Strengths, Weaknesses, etc. They are deliberately there to help the B-school know a little bit more about you and are often referred to during the interview. It is highly recommended to keep a photocopy of every form that you fill so that you can revise what you have written before the interview.

- Accuracy vs. Speed in CAT
The usual dilemma that one faces while preparing for CAT takes the form of a trade off between accuracy and speed. Honestly, one need not trade off one for the other. In fact, to use a combinatorial term, these two are not mutually exclusive events. However, I will not definitely conclude these two events to be independent ones.
Accuracy is important. But you are not launching a space ship. Essentially this means that you should not hesitate to approximate whenever needed and proceed. For instance, if you realize that you have to find the amount of time taken by two pipes A and B to fill a tank. If these two pipes individually take 20 and 30 minutes respectively, do not spend time trying to solve the problem as 1/20 + 1/30 and then find the LCM and then the answer. If a pipe takes 20 minutes to fill a tank, it fills 5% in a minute. Similarly, another pipe takes 30 minutes to fill a tank, it fills 3.33% in a minute. So, together they fill over 8% a minute. This means they will take about 12 minutes to fill the tank. This kind of approximation and switching between % and fractions will help you gain time.
Similarly, one important thing that you need to keep in mind is that as you proceed with each step of solving a question; take a quick glance at the answer choices. This way, in many instances, you will find that you do not have to go to the last step and find the answer. Even if it is only one or two steps saved for each problem, that will give you enough time to crack another 3 or 4 more problems in CAT. That is a huge difference when it comes to getting calls from the IIMs.
